Motherhood

When a mother is born

Motherhood isn’t just about having a child.

It also involves the birth of a new identity—a profound transformation that affects the way we feel, relate to others, and understand ourselves. For something new to be born, a part of us must die: patterns, dynamics, loyalties. The way we inhabit ourselves and the world definitely changes.

This process is known as matrescence: the psychological and emotional transition that accompanies the journey into motherhood.

Laura Gutman

“The postpartum period is an opening of the soul. An abyss. An initiation. If we are willing to immerse ourselves in the waters of our unknown self.”

During this stage, a wide range of emotions—and sometimes contradictory ones—may arise. Love and fear. Gratitude and exhaustion. Joy and grief for the life you left behind. You may feel lost, overwhelmed by everything that motherhood stirs up inside you.

It’s not always easy to talk about it.

We live in a culture that either idealizes motherhood or reduces it to practical matters, leaving little room for the intimate and complex experience of becoming a mother—the rite of passage that strips away the layers of yourself you no longer need, allowing you to live more authentically.

Therapy can be a space where you can make sense of what you’re going through, understand the changes you’re experiencing, and find your own way to navigate this new stage of life.
